Help needed!

If anyone could help me make this more realistic looking, that would be amazing! This is the first time I am really trying to make it realistic, without any lines.
So far I am having trouble with the fur, as well as the whole aspect of it, if that makes any sense.

So if you could leave examples or how to make it more realistic, what I need to work on, etc, that would be sweet!

First things first – are you using photo references? By far the easiest way to draw/paint a realistic animal is to study what it looks like in real life. I learnt to draw animals mainly by copying photos of them. You can learn a lot from doing this, although obviously if you upload the picture make sure you credit the original photo. Once you’ve got an animal’s basic structure in your head you’ll find it easier to draw them from your imagination (Although even pro artists rely heavily on photo reference).

The main thing that jumps out at me is you’ve given this dog human eyes. You rarely see the whites of a dog’s eyes, unless they’re looking far to the side ([link]). Dogs don’t tend to have emerald green eyes either, although there’s no reason you can’t draw a dog with eyes this colour ☺

As for painting the fur, that’s something I really struggle with myself so I can’t give much advice, other than to use photo references.

A few tips to improve your art in general – draw a little bit from life/photos every day – you improve really quickly if you do. You say in your profile you work with dogs – if you could make some sketches of them during quiet moments that would really help you. Personally I found painting in real media improved my computer paintings a lot. This may work for you too, you’ll have some fun even if it doesn’t.

Hope you find this critique helpful ☺
